15:55 I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly sure System Shock has an engine with proper 3D space and full texture mapping and no raycasting at all. In fact, this was also the case for Ultima Underworld 1 released in 1992.

This was a wild time in home entertainment, when these consoles were contemporary. The capabilities of optical discs formed a new frontier and inspired a surge of creativity. Which is why the games are hit or miss and quality standards are all over the map. It’s a shame that the console was in its death throes by 98 because maybe they could have ported Might and Magic 6-7-8 over or convinced NWC to develop something for the console.

This was my very first RPG experience and it was mind-blowing to my young self. Unforgettable. I had the Tandy 1000 version which had the PC graphics but also nice music and sound.

I love you can really see the blueprints and the influence for the soulsborne series took on, the tough but “fair” difficulty, even the weakest enemy can kill you if you’re not careful…even tho TES is Bethesda, u can see where they took some inspiration from kings fields with the first person dungeon crawler Edit: and I love it ❤😅

This really was the golden age of gaming, games feel hollow and lifeless now.

Ultima V was a thing that shaped my entire life. I'll never forget that experience, and it's still on my all time favorite games list. I loved this video. It brought me back to one of the happiest times in my life.

Did you get a different textures upgrade for Dark Project? Items looks crispier than I remember.

@33:12 - Managing the party and the food/items is why I want someone to port/remake this game into the Ultima5 engine for those things (with a 40k gold/food limit instead of 9999). If anything, we could use U5 battle UI too (tho with U3 items/spells). I can only manage so much in Ultima3 before I get tired and dump my playthru. For the wind, just use Ultima4/5 mechanic of slower movements and it would get rid of that aggravating no move because the wind is dead (plus you could row in U5 for very long time consumption for a single move, tho "Hourly time" is something unique to U5, unfortunately.

Weird thing is, I played Dark Project around when it first came out and consider it perhaps my favorite game ever. Yet, I’ve never finished Thief 2. I think I really missed the supernatural stuff. I do intend to finish it soon. Maybe.

I’m excited to see you get to Ultima Underworld now because I think this series (and king’s field) has a lot of its DNA

I don't know what it is about Lynx's design, but it's my favorite of any character in anything. Ever.

I have watched a lot of Ultima content on youtube over the years, but this is some of the best and most thorough. Can't wait to see Ultima 6 covered, that's where I came into the series and it still holds a tremendous amount of magic to me.
